The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has emerged as the long-range ambition for Estrange after her emphatic return to action in the Lester Piggott Fillies’ Stakes at Haydock on May 31— a performance that left no doubt she’s graduated to a higher league.

The daughter of  Night Of Thunder, who impressed on two of her three outings last season, took the step up to Group Three company in her stride, brushing aside a competitive field with an air of authority that hinted at bigger days ahead.

Talk of a possible Irish raid in the Lancashire Oaks, keeping the filly at a mile and a half — with an eye steadily fixed on Longchamp in October.

“She’s always shown us a great deal,” said Cheveley Park Stud’s Managing Director Chris Richardson. “She really caught the eye on debut at Goodwood, and Saturday just confirmed what we’ve quietly believed for some time.”

“If she’d scraped home by a neck, we’d have been delighted. So for her to win in the manner she did — it suggests there’s real substance to her talent.”

The team are hoping that softer autumn ground in Paris will play to her strengths, with the Arc very much the ultimate aim.

“We’ll work back from ParisLongchamp — that’s the dream, and we’ll try to keep it alive,” Richardson continued.

In the shorter term, the Lancashire Oaks looks the likely next stop. “The Pretty Polly’s over ten furlongs, and at this stage we’re minded to keep her at twelve. Her only blot last season was at Yarmouth, and that was down to us. The ground was too quick, and we got that wrong. But she put things right at Doncaster.”

Jan Brueghel repelled the late thrust of Calandagan in a finish as tight as it was thrilling to land the Betfred Coronation Cup on June 6.

Unbeaten when claiming Britain’s oldest Classic at Doncaster, Aidan O’Brien’s colt had the Melbourne Cup on his radar—until the Australian vets intervened. A subdued return this spring in a Group Three had some wondering whether the shine had dulled.

But like so many from Ballydoyle, the second run told the real story. With Ryan Moore at his imperious best, Jan Brueghel found more when it mattered, answering every call and refusing to yield as the 8-13 favourite Calandagan loomed large with menace inside the final furlong.

Try as he might, the favourite could never quite level up—Jan Brueghel always doing just enough, ears pricked, heart blazing, crossing half a length to the good.

“A very tough horse,” said O’Brien. “Ryan gave him a class ride—he doesn’t surrender. He improved bundles from the last day, and he was still full of running at the line.”
